Cameras Could Take Night Photos Without a Flash

Whenever you take a picture in the dark there are options: a flash, a longer exposure or digitally enhancing the final image. But sometimes a flash ruins the dramatic lighting, a long exposure is too slow for fast action and editing in Photoshop is too complicated.

Help is on the way: a team of scientists led by Andras Kis at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland have found a material that could make cameras five times more sensitive to light, reducing or even eliminating the need for a flash or a long exposure. The material — made from a mix of molybdenum and sulfur— was used to make a single-pixel prototype sensor that only needed 1/25th of a second to expose a night time streetscape that other cameras would require 1/5th of a second. The sensitivity of the new sensor is fast enough that moving people didn’t get blurred.
It works because molybdenite is much more sensitive to light than silicon, the other material other digital sensors in cameras are made from.

Besides sensitivity, there’s another plus to molybdenite: it’s cheap. Unlike other exotic technologies or semiconducting materials, there’s lots of it around and factories making image sensors out of it won’t need re-tooling.

70% of all red meat consumed worldwide is goat meat!

In the United States alone, the number of goats slaughtered has doubled every 10 years, for the past 3 decades. The reason for this trend is perhaps because of the popularity of goat meat on a global scale. Goat meat is considered kosher, as well as halal, meaning it can be eaten by members of two internationally recognized religions.

The nutritional value of goat meat is substantial, with a similar sized serving of goat meat having one third the calories of beef, and much less fat. First goat cheese, and now goat meat is proving to be a healthy alternative for the flavors of food that we just can't seem to ignore.

Brushing your teeth BEFORE you eat breakfast is healthier for your teeth!

A recent survey revealed that 81% of people were completely unaware that brushing your teeth after you eat a breakfast which includes juice or any sugary foods can actually permanently damage your teeth!

The reason you can suffer from permanent enamel damage is because sugar foods and beverages make the enamel on your teeth weak, and if you brush your teeth immediately after your enamel is weakened, you can damage your precious teeth! So, what should you do?

Dentists recommend brushing your teeth BEFORE breakfast, rather than after. However, you can also lay off the sugary foods in the morning, wait an hour after eating to brush your teeth, or, have some cheese or milk to help balance out the acids in your mouth!

Phytoplankton

Phytoplankton are microscopic marine plants.

• A harmful algal bloom in Lake Erie during the fall of 2006.

Phytoplankton, also known as microalgae, are similar to terrestrial plants in that they contain chlorophyll and require sunlight in order to live and grow. Most phytoplankton are buoyant and float in the upper part of the ocean, where sunlight penetrates the water. Phytoplankton also require inorganic nutrients such as nitrates, phosphates, and sulfur which they convert into proteins, fats, and carbohydrates.

The two main classes of phytoplankton are dinoflagellates and diatoms. Dinoflagellates use a whip-like tail, or flagella, to move through the water and their bodies are covered with complex shells. Diatoms also have shells, but they are made of a different substance and their structure is rigid and made of interlocking parts. Diatoms do not rely on flagella to move through the water and instead rely on ocean currents to travel through the water.
In a balanced ecosystem, phytoplankton provide food for a wide range of sea creatures including whales, shrimp, snails, and jellyfish. When too many nutrients are available, phytoplankton may grow out of control and form harmful algal blooms (HABs). These blooms can produce extremely toxic compounds that have harmful effects on fish, shellfish, mammals, birds, and even people.

Dyson sphere

A Dyson sphere is a hypothetical megastructure originally described by Freeman Dyson . Such a "sphere" would be a system of orbiting solar-power satellites meant to completely encompass a star and capture most or all of its energy output. Dyson speculated that such structures would be the logical consequence of the long-term survival and escalating energy needs of a technological civilization, and proposed that searching for evidence of the existence of such structures might lead to the detection of advanced intelligent extra terrestrial life .
Since then, other variant designs involving building an artificial structure or series of structures to encompass a star have been proposed in exploratory engineering or described in science fiction under the name "Dyson sphere". These later proposals have not been limited to solar-power stations. Many involve habitation or industrial elements. Most fictional depictions describe a solid shell of matter enclosing a star, which is considered the least plausible variant of the idea. In May 2013, at the Starship Century Symposium in San Diego, Freeman Dyson repeated his comments that he wished the concept had not been named after him.

Why do fireflies light up?

Fireflies are sometimes called lightning bugs. Many a child has spent a summer evening chasing them. And maybe you’ve wondered – how and why are these insects able to light up?

The answer is that fireflies contain an organic compound in their abdomens called luciferin. As air rushes into the abdomen, it reacts with the luciferin. A chemical reaction gives off the familiar glow of a firefly. This light is sometimes called “cold light” because it generates so little heat. The firefly can regulate the air flow into the abdomen to create a pulsating pattern.

Some experts think the firefly’s flashy style may warn predators of the insect’s bitter taste. On the other hand, some frogs don’t seem to mind. They eat so many fireflies that they themselves begin to glow. Male fireflies also light up to signal their desire for mates – and willing females attract the males with flashes of their own.
But not all the flashing of fireflies is motivated by romance. While each firefly species has its own pattern of flashing, some females imitate the patterns of other species. Males land next to them – only to be eaten alive.

So the next time you see a firefly, keep in mind that its flickering isn’t just a wonder of the night. It’s also a unique, and sometimes deadly, language of love.

• Bottom line: Why do fireflies light up? It’s because of a chemical reaction between an organic compound in the fireflies’ abdomens – called luciferin – and the air.

What is a derecho?

A derecho is a violent storm system that can produce widespread wind damage across a large area. It’s usually associated with a rapidly moving band of showers and thunderstorms. The strong to violent winds are typically associated ahead of the main system as the outflow from the storms becomes more concentrated. Wind damage is typically directed into one direction and can create widespread damage along a relatively straight path. These windstorms typically form in the late spring and summer and typically affect states east of the Rocky Mountains.

A derecho has a very specific definition in meteorology, and must include the follow criteria to be classified as a derecho:

1) There must be a concentrated area of convectively induced wind damage/gusts greater than 50 knots, or 60 miles per hour.

2) The area must have a major axis length of 400 kilometers, or 248.5 miles.

3) Wind reports should showa continuous and non random pattern of occurrence. For instance, a swath of storms should consistently produce wind reports as the system moves to the east or south east.

4) In the storm reported areas, at least three reports, separated by 64 km or more, should include wind gusts greater than 64 knots, or 74 mph.

5) Derechos are typically continuous and can sustain itself for hours. With that said, no more than three hours can elapse between successive wind damage events.

If a derecho is moving into your area, go inside and stay away from windows and find a room away from trees that could fall and crash into your house.

A Greek taxi driver has the world record for longest mileage in a single car: 2.9 million miles!

Greek taxi driver Gregorios Sachinidis from Thessalonica donated his 1976 Mercedes to the Mercedes Benz Museum Collection! It may seem like a classic Mercedes from the outside, but on the inside, more importantly when looking at the mileage, you will see that his car has 4.6 million kilometers on it!
The massive distance covered by this single taxi cab has been a milestone in convincing people that Mercedes-Benz cars can travel an extremely far distance before they need to be turned in! Since Gregorios Sachinidis was donating his car to the Museum, Mercedes-Benz decided to donate a brand new C 200 CDI to be picked up by him, whenever he feels ready after he returns to his home in Thessalonica!

Google Balloons: 7 things to know

Google is experimenting with helium-filled balloons that beam the internet from the sky. Developed over a period of 18 months, these jellyfish-shaped balloons are part of Project Loon that Google has commissioned them in New Zealand.

Here are 7 things about Google's internet beaming balloons.

• What are Google Balloons

→ The helium-filled balloons are made from a thin polyethylene film and are 15 meters (49 feet) in diameter when fully inflated.

• Where are they present?

→ They float in the stratosphere about 20 kilometers (12 miles) above the Earth.

• How Google Balloons work?

→ The balloons would sail on the stratosphere's winds in a continuous circuit around the globe. The balloons come equipped with flight computers, and Google would control the balloons' altitude from the ground, keeping them moving along a desired channel by using different winds at different heights.

• Are Google Balloons revolutionary?

→ Google says past attempts to control balloons have involved tethering them or using expensive motors to keep them in place. They say simply sailing with the winds was one of the company's breakthrough ideas.

• What is the advantage?

→ Google says the balloons have the potential to provide internet access far more cheaply, quickly and widely than traditional underground fiber cables.
One downside is that computer users on the ground would need to installa receiver to get the signal.

• Reach of Google Balloons

→ The transmitter on each balloon would beam down the internet to an area about 1,250 square kilometers (780 square miles) - twice the size of New York City.

• Challenges Google Balloons face

→ Managing the flight of just one balloon in our complex and ever-changing atmosphere is a huge challenge. Trying to harmonize an entire fleet of thousands of them will be mind-boggling.

Soldiers in the German Army can disobey certain orders!

Yep, it’s true; in the German Army, soldiers are obliged to disobey any order they think would violate human dignity. Few, if any other armies have this rule!

This is all based in the principle of "command and obedience in the Bunderswehr". This doesn't mean they can disobey anything, though. If a soldier insubordinates for other reasons, he/she may be punished with imprisonment up to three years if they acted negligently.

This human dignity exception was enacted in the 1950s, after seeing what blind obedience did to Nazi Germany soldiers. This rule now means that soldiers need not fear retribution if a commander's orders would lead to something horrible like it did with the Nazis.

A 13-year- old sacrificed himself to destroy a tank!

Mohammad Hossein Fahmideh was born on May 6th of 1967 and died on October 30th of 1980 as a true war hero. At the age of 13 in 1980, during the outbreak of the Iran-Iraq war he made the decision of leaving home and joining the war.

He was fighting along the Iran army, and at one point the Iraqi troops pushed the Iranian troops back as they were passing through avery narrow canal. Many of the Iranian soldiers were either dead or wounded at this point by the Iraqi troops.

Therefore, Hossein took a grenade from a nearby body, pulled the pin out, jumped right underneath an enemy’s tank, and by blowing himself up he was able to disable the tank!

This made the enemies think that the area was mined and therefore decided to stop their advancement.

Until today, Mohammad Hossein Fahmideh is considered a true national Iranian hero, and one of the boys with bigger guts that have ever lived.

What’s The Top Speed A Human Can Run?

The limit to how fast a human can run is 9.48 seconds for the 100-meter race, 0.10 seconds faster than Usain Bolt’s current world record, according to Stanford biologist Mark Denny. That is, if you are talking about natural human beings. In a 2008 study published in the Journal of Experimental Biology, Denny modeled the fastest human running speed using records of men’s 100-meter race results going back to the 1900s. Denny plotted the annual best times in the race into a graph and used computer programs to come up with an equation whose curve best models the behavior of the actual graph he obtained. The curve showed humanly achievable time for the 100-meter race would level off at 9.48 seconds. ‘They haven’t plateaued yet, but you can definitely see the data are bending a little towards that plateau,’ Denny says.

China surpasses US Titan, develops world's fastest supercomputer

China's defence scientists have built the world's fastest supercomputer, capable of performing 33.86 quadrillion operations per second, surpassing the US Titan supercomputer.

Costing USD 100 million, the Tianhe-2 has a peak performance speed of 54.9 quadrillion operations per second, according to the National University of Defence Technology, which built the computer.

The computer's predecessor, the Tianhe-1A, was the world's fastest supercomputer from November 2010 to June 2011, when it was surpassed by Japan's K computer.

Tianhe-2, or Milky Way-2, will be deployed at the National Supercomputer Center in Guangzho, China, by the end of the year, according to TOP 500, a project ranking the 500 most powerful computer systems in the world.

State television CCTV had shown jubilant scenes as the supercomputer made it for second time taking the first place in the Top 500 list of the world's most powerful
supercomputers.

The surprise appearance of Tianhe-2, two years ahead of the expected deployment, marks China's first return to the No 1 position since November 2010, when Tianhe-1A was the top system.

Tianhe-2 has 16,000 nodes, each with two Intel Xeon IvyBridge processors and three Xeon Phi processors for a combined total of 3,120,000 computing cores.

The supercomputer Tianhe-2 is capable of operating as fast as 33.86 petaflops per second. It was ranked today as the world's fastest computing system, according to TOP500.

Titan, a Cray XK7 system installed at the US Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory and previously the No 1 system, is now ranked No 2.

Experts believe Tianhe-2 demonstrates that China has been developing its own chip technology, which will ensure that the country plays an important role in the world's high-performance computing (HPC).
